Kia has issued a recall for the Telluride model year 2024. This recall applies to vehicles that were assembled between October 1, 2023, and December 6, 2023. Similarly, Hyundai has identified suspect vehicles that were assembled between August 21, 2023, and October 12, 2023. Kia America has acknowledged that there are potentially 83 vehicles affected by this issue, while HMNA is aware of 18 additional incidents.
The first incident was reported on October 30 of the previous year, which prompted the dealer to escalate the matter to Hyundai Motor North America Service Quality Department. In January 2024, the supplier implemented a more comprehensive inspection process to ensure the durability of newly manufactured valve springs.
If the suspect valve springs break while driving, it can result in a loss of engine power or even a hole in the engine block. Fortunately, neither Hyundai nor Kia have received reports of underhood fires, crashes, injuries, or any other serious incidents related to this condition. The specific valve spring used by Hyundai for the Lambda II 3.8-liter GDi V6 engine is identified by part number 22221-3L310. This part is available from various online retailers for just over $5.
Daewonkangup, the supplier, addressed this problem in their production process by replacing the spring drawing die on July 26, 2023. It is quite surprising that the supplier’s quality control did not identify this flaw in a timely manner, especially considering that engine valve springs are precision components with strict tolerances.
A notification will be sent to both dealers and owners regarding Daewonkangup’s mistake no later than April 13, 2024. Dealers will replace the engine sub-assembly for affected owners at no cost. However, Hyundai has not provided clear clarification on what exactly the engine sub-assembly entails, whether it is the long block, the valvetrain, or another component.
The Palisade, which has been in production since 2018 for the 2020 model year, replaced the long-wheelbase version of the Santa Fe in Hyundai’s lineup. This family-sized crossover, exclusively available with a V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, received a facelift in 2022 for the 2023 model year. As of now, the 2024 Hyundai Palisade has a starting price of $36,650, excluding the destination fee.
There are six trim levels available in the United States, including the off-road-oriented XRT grade. For the highest specification, known as the Calligraphy Night, customers will need to pay $53,850, plus an additional $1,395 for the destination charge.
Looking ahead, Hyundai plans to redesign the Palisade for the 2026 model year, drawing inspiration from the boxy design cues of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe. The South Korean carparazzi have already spotted camouflaged prototypes of the upcoming Palisade, some of which are powered by hybrid engines. However, it remains uncertain whether the hybrid powertrain will be offered in the US market. Internally, Hyundai refers to the next-generation Palisade as the LX3, and prototypes in South Korea have been observed with two different engine options: a 3.5-liter turbo V6 and a hybrid 2.5-liter I4.
