Referred to as D23, the current generation also gave birth to a Mercedes-branded counterpart called X-Class. However, the X-Class faced poor sales and eventually met its demise. This outcome is not surprising, given its high starting price and subpar interior plastic trim. Interestingly, the X-Class was never sold in the United States for unknown reasons.
Even the Navara, which is part of the same generation, faced challenges. Sales declined significantly in the European Union and United Kingdom, leading Nissan to cancel its production. The final Navara of this generation was manufactured in late 2021 at the Nissan Motor Iberica plant in Spain. However, the Navara continues to be available in markets like Mexico, Argentina, and China.
Nissan, being a major automaker with substantial financial resources, has decided to take a cost-saving approach rather than developing an entirely new and improved Navara. With Nissan’s influence over Mitsubishi, it is possible that the L200/Triton will adopt Nissan’s design elements.
Pixel artist Theottle has even gone a step further by envisioning the next-generation Navara with L200/Triton foundations and the Interstar’s headlights. The Interstar, redesigned for 2024, is also a product that shares its diesel and electric powertrains with the Renault Master.
A few years ago, former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn revealed that Mitsubishi’s next-generation midsize pickup truck would share its platform with the Navara. The sixth-generation L200/Triton was introduced in July 2023 in three different body styles, with production taking place at the Mitsubishi Motors Thailand assembly plant.
As for the fourth-generation Navara, it is expected to make its debut in the second half of 2024 for the 2025 model year. There are rumors of hybrid powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid variant similar to the Ford Ranger PHEV. However, this model is not intended for the United States market. The Ford Ranger PHEV features a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine and promises an electric range of 45 kilometers (28 miles).
The 2025 Nissan Navara might utilize the 4N16 turbo diesel engine from the Mitsubishi pickup truck, available in either single- or twin-turbo configurations. Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. Alternatively, Nissan may opt to continue using the current generation’s YS23 engine.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its appearance, rumors suggest that Nissan will not reintroduce the Navara to the European market. However, this decision seems unwise considering the 16.3 percent increase in truck registrations in the European Union in 2023 compared to 2022. The Navara, though, is primarily recognized as a workhorse in Europe, in contrast to the full-size pickup trucks commonly seen in the United States.
