Mercedes, in search of a long-term replacement for Lewis Hamilton, has expressed interest in Verstappen. The departure of Adrian Newey from Red Bull Racing has sparked speculation about Verstappen’s future in Formula 1. Verstappen, who has won the last three championships with Red Bull and is on track to win a fourth this year, is currently under contract with the team until 2028. However, with Newey’s departure, there are uncertainties surrounding Verstappen’s tenure and potential destinations.
Mercedes, aiming to find a long-term successor to Lewis Hamilton, has shown keen interest in Verstappen. The situation is further complicated by the exit clauses in Verstappen’s contract, which allow him to leave if key personnel like Helmut Marko or if dissatisfaction arises with the team’s 2026 project. Reports vary regarding the extent of Newey’s influence on Verstappen. While some speculate that Verstappen may follow Newey to his next venture, others suggest that Verstappen’s camp is more concerned about retaining technical director Pierre Wache alongside Marko.
Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, has expressed concerns about Red Bull’s stability following Newey’s departure. He fears that the team may disintegrate, which could unsettle his son. Sensing an opportunity, Mercedes is ready to intensify its efforts to recruit Verstappen. They are willing to offer significant financial incentives, potentially surpassing Hamilton’s salary, as well as a lucrative ambassadorship deal. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is even prepared to recruit Wache and retain Marko to entice the 27-year-old driver.
Mercedes reportedly plans to meet Verstappen during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, an event where Verstappen aims to continue his winning streak. Whether Verstappen could switch teams in 2025 or if Mercedes needs to wait until 2026 remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Mercedes is willing to secure Verstappen’s future by offering a one-year deal to Carlos Sainz in order to maintain a spot for Verstappen in their lineup.
