Andrey Rublev has provided a detailed explanation of his true meaning when he likened his mental state during tense and stressful moments on the court to that of a frightening film.
Rublev, who holds the fifth position in the global rankings, is recognized as both an exceptional player and an individual who displays intense passion and emotions. While Rublev is no stranger to outbursts and emotional breakdowns, he directs these reactions solely towards himself.
During a grueling match against Alex de Minaur in the round-of-16 at the Australian Open, which lasted 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-0, Rublev experienced numerous such moments. In an on-court interview, the 26-year-old was asked by Jim Courier about his thought process during competition, to which he provided a genuinely amusing response.
“In those moments, it’s akin to watching a terrifying movie,” Rublev expressed in Melbourne.
“It’s difficult to articulate the specific thoughts that cross your mind. Emotionally, you become overwhelmed and lose control. I don’t know. It’s stressful when you’re unable to think clearly, causing your thoughts to race at an accelerated pace without any logical reasoning,” Rublev explained to the ATP website.
“It’s as if I were to tell you that you have five seconds to open your camera, and in that moment, you become so overwhelmed that a multitude of thoughts flood your mind: What is it? How do I open it? And ultimately, from this seemingly simple task, you become stressed. That’s what sometimes happens.”
Meanwhile, Rublev is participating in his first tournament since the Australian Open at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam this week. In his opening match, the second-seeded Rublev secured a 7-5 6-3 victory against qualifier Zizou Bergs.
This marks the fifth time the 26-year-old Russian has competed in Rotterdam. In previous years, Rublev achieved success in the tournament by winning the title in 2021, only to reach the semifinals the following year.
Rublev is considered one of the top contenders for this week’s Rotterdam championship, and it will be intriguing to see if the 26-year-old can secure his second title in Rotterdam this year.
