We have previously discussed the conversion of helicopters into small dwellings on this platform. While it would have been interesting, it is important to note that this particular helicopter is no longer operational. The concept of a fully functional flying recreational vehicle was attempted by Winnebago in the past. The Heli-Camper, introduced in the 1970s, provided a living space of 115 square feet (10.7 square meters) and could accommodate up to six individuals. For more detailed information, please refer to the article dedicated to this topic.
Today, we are exploring a tiny home known as “Galahad.” It is a Westland Wessex XT469, an original rescue helicopter from the Falklands in 1965. Interestingly, this helicopter was actively involved in the Falklands War. In brief, the Falkland Islands, which are still a British overseas territory, were invaded by Argentina in 1982. The United Kingdom retaliated, leading to Argentina’s surrender after a 74-day conflict.
This particular helicopter played a significant role in the war and retains many of its original features, including dials and wires, providing an authentic experience to those inside.
When initially beholding this impressive vehicle, one may be struck by its immense size. The accompanying photo above showcases the stark contrast between a 6-foot man and the helicopter, which stands at approximately 13-14 feet (4-4.2 meters) in height.
Despite its dimensions, the owners have added two extensions adjacent to the helicopter to accommodate additional occupants. Additionally, the aircraft receives a fresh coat of paint every year to maintain its appearance.
Let us commence our tour with the extension on the left side, which houses an Airstream trailer, or a similar model, painted to match the helicopter’s theme. Upon entering, one will discover a well-equipped kitchen. It features a spacious stainless steel sink, a table, a refrigerator, ample counter space, and a two-burner stove with an oven below. Furthermore, the trailer has been insulated to ensure comfort and warmth. An intriguing detail is a document containing the complete history of the helicopter, including its operational involvement and flight destinations.
Directly ahead from the entrance lies the bathroom. Although compact, it includes a small sink, a toilet, and even a bidet. However, for showering, one must utilize an outdoor facility. Notably, the ceiling is adorned with multiple photographs depicting the helicopter during its active service.
To reach the helicopter itself, one must traverse a hallway adorned with additional pictures of the aircraft. The owners have remained faithful to the theme by incorporating various military-style lighting fixtures.
Upon entering the central section of the helicopter, you will find yourself in the living room. It features a lengthy sofa with storage compartments underneath. The most captivating aspect, however, is the preservation of the original writings displayed within the original frame.
In the tabloid-style format, the text can be presented as follows:
First Bedroom:
On the right side, you’ll discover the initial sleeping quarters – it is situated toward the tail of the helicopter, where the body begins to taper. A bed suitable for one person occupies the entire width of the area, accompanied by two circular windows and a small reflection surface.

Parachute Storage:
Instead of a traditional headboard, you’ll observe a door labeled “Parachute Storage” – open it to witness how the space narrows down towards the tail’s end. Generally, this bedroom is better suited for accommodating a child.
Space Leading to Cockpit:
Proceeding towards the opposite side, you will enter the area that leads to the cockpit. The frame is integrated with numerous wires and switches – some of which have been repurposed to control the lighting. Additionally, an electric heater is provided in this room to combat any chilly temperatures. It is important to be cautious and avoid hitting your head on the ceiling, as indicated by warning signs inside, due to the interior height being approximately 6 feet (1.82 meters).
Cockpit:
Undoubtedly, the cockpit serves as the highlight of this compact dwelling, and it has been preserved in its original state. To access it, you can utilize small ladders. Imagining the experience of starting up this impressive machine and feeling the vibrations it produced is quite daunting.

Fold-Down Seats and Windows:
Within the cockpit, you will find two fold-down seats. The original yokes, controls, and dials are still intact, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. The side windows can be opened, and fold-down steps on the exterior allow for an exit. Interestingly, back in the day, the pilots wore waterproof gear as rain would somehow find its way into the cockpit. As indicated by a sign within the cockpit, even after 60 years, rain still manages to seep inside.
Double Bedroom:
The final section of this petite abode is a double bedroom. It is equipped with a mirror, a storage chest, and a double bed featuring a sizable skylight. This skylight offers an ideal vantage point for stargazing, especially considering the helicopter’s proximity to a relatively small town, resulting in minimal light pollution. Furthermore, once you are ready to sleep, you can pull a cover over the skylight, creating complete darkness in the room.
Distinctive Conversion:
Overall, this conversion is truly unique. It provides a cozy living space with all the necessary amenities of a tiny home, while also offering a rare glimpse into history. The best part is that this home is available for booking a stay. It is located near Newport, UK, on the Isle of Wight, which is the largest island in England.
