A Belichick Secures New Position
There is news of a recent career move by a Belichick.
The individual in question is Steve Belichick, aged 36, who happens to be the son of the renowned former NFL coach, Bill Belichick. Since 2020, Steve has been serving as the New England Patriots’ outside linebackers coach under his father. Multiple reports suggest that he is set to assume the role of defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies.
Although there is a possibility of the Patriots and their new head coach, Jerod Mayo, making an effort to retain him, sources indicate that this scenario is unlikely to occur.

Following a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023, Bill Belichick was dismissed by the Patriots on January 11. Belichick had previously achieved great success, winning six Super Bowls during his tenure as the Patriots coach from 2001 to 2018. However, he has not secured a new NFL head coaching position since then, as there are currently no available openings in the league.
In 2012, Steve Belichick joined the New England Patriots as a defensive assistant, despite lacking any prior coaching experience. After four seasons in this role, he transitioned to becoming the safeties coach from 2016 to 2019. From 2020 to 2024, Belichick took on the responsibility of coaching the outside linebackers. During the 2020 season, he had the opportunity to work closely with Jedd Fisch, the newly appointed quarterback coach for the Patriots, before Fisch departed to become the head coach of the Arizona Wildcats from 2021 to 2023.
Following the departure of Kalen DeBoer, who replaced Nick Saban at Alabama, Jedd Fisch assumed the position of head coach for the Washington Huskies last month. Fisch has now chosen to bring in Belichick, and there are rumors that he may also recruit Vinnie Sunseri, the running backs coach for the New England Patriots, to join the Washington Huskies. Sunseri had previously served on the defensive side for New England in 2020, before transitioning to coaching running backs from 2021 to 2023.
Despite being 71 years old, Bill Belichick interviewed multiple times for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons last month. However, the Falcons ultimately decided to hire Raheem Morris, the former defensive coordinator for both the Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams, as their head coach.
The decision to hire Belichick is undoubtedly a risky one for Washington. While his name alone may provide a recruiting advantage, it remains uncertain whether Steve Belichick is prepared to oversee an entire defense. In terms of experience, Belichick has played lacrosse at Rutgers more extensively than football. During the 2011 season, he served as a long snapper for the Rutgers football team under the guidance of coach Greg Schiano.
Perhaps Jedd Fisch observed something promising in Belichick during their brief time together in New England.
Alternatively, Fisch may be laying the groundwork to bring on board Bill Belichick as an exceptional analyst, widely regarded as the greatest of all time, before he secures another NFL head coaching position. Such a strategy would undoubtedly be a remarkable move.
