In a familiar pattern, the Dallas Cowboys experienced a collapse during the playoffs following a successful regular season. Their defeat to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round saw them fall behind 27-0 towards the end of the second quarter. While their defense crumbled in that game, they also have another pressing need: a more formidable ground game.
During an episode of FS1’s “Undisputed,” former Cowboys player and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin expressed his desire for his former team to sign star running back Derrick Henry. Irvin believes that Henry’s addition could be the catalyst for a turnaround.
Henry will be among the notable running backs available in free agency this offseason, and it is expected that he will attract interest from multiple teams. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in four of the last five seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In the most recent season, Henry rushed for 1,167 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.
However, there are concerns regarding Henry’s age, as he recently turned 30. His performance has shown signs of decline in the past couple of seasons, particularly after suffering a Jones fracture in 2021. Running backs typically experience a significant drop in production around the age of 30, and it remains uncertain if any team will be willing to offer him a lucrative contract. This is especially true considering the current state of the running back market in the NFL, which has seen a decline.
In 2023, Tony Pollard took over as Dallas’ primary running back and rushed for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns. However, his performance in 2022 was more impressive, with nine touchdowns and an average of 5.2 yards per rush attempt. The Cowboys’ rushing offense was only average, making their overall offensive strategy predictable and easier for opposing teams to defend against.
