MS Dhoni, Manoj Tiwary (Images via ESPNcricinfo) recently declared his retirement from cricket following Bengal’s final game in the Ranji Trophy against Bihar. Despite not having played many international matches for India, Tiwary attributes this to the actions of the former Indian captain.
In his 12 ODIs, Tiwary scored a total of 287 runs, including an impressive unbeaten 104 against West Indies in 2011, for which he was awarded the Player of the Match. However, despite his commendable performances, Dhoni made the decision to drop him from the playing XI for the subsequent matches. When questioned about any regrets during his international career, Tiwary expressed confusion as to why Captain Cool had chosen to exclude him.
Furthermore, Tiwary expressed his disappointment at not being given the opportunity to feature in Test cricket, despite having played 65 first-class matches. He questioned why he was not selected after scoring 93 runs against England in a friendly game and instead, Yuvraj Singh was chosen. Tiwary believes that when one’s confidence reaches its peak and is then shattered, it can have a detrimental effect on the player.
Additionally, Tiwary suggested that the Ranji Trophy should be abolished due to various reasons, one of which is the lack of proper infrastructure. He also expressed his concern that young players have become too focused on the Indian Premier League (IPL), which has diminished the significance of the Ranji Trophy.
Tiwary went on to mention that he may face consequences from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for openly expressing his opinions. He revealed that he has already received a 20 percent reduction in his match fee from the BCCI for his post on X, where he discussed the need to scrap the Ranji Trophy due to the inadequate infrastructure.
