After a disappointing early exit from the Montpellier tournament, Richard Gasquet, currently ranked 131st in the ATP, granted an interview to l’Equipe where he discussed the realization that his body no longer performs at the same level as it did in his younger years. Gasquet drew a comparison to Novak Djokovic, who, despite being the same age, continues to excel in the sport. Gasquet expressed his astonishment at Djokovic’s strength and success at his age, citing him as an exceptional case similar to the likes of Michael Jordan in other sports. Gasquet himself acknowledged that typically, athletes in their late 30s are not as capable as they were in their mid-20s, and he never anticipated playing tennis at the age of 38. However, Gasquet confessed that his current physical condition presents challenges when it comes to competing on the court. The Frenchman revealed that he will ultimately decide to retire based on the level of physical pain he experiences and his inability to win matches. Gasquet admitted that the prospect of retiring has crossed his mind, particularly since he has not achieved satisfactory results in 2024. He mentioned the French Open and Bercy as potential tournaments to end his career, as fellow French players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon have done. As time passes, Gasquet, like any other athlete, is confronted with the reality of his career coming to an end.
