Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sure you’re familiar with the renowned brand GMC. The chances are high that you’re currently driving one of their timeless vehicles. However, have you ever come across EarthCruiser? If you have, then you’ve had the pleasure of witnessing some truly extraordinary off-road vehicles in your lifetime.
Recently, a remarkable collaboration has given birth to a magnificent creation – an enhanced Hummer EV Pickup designed to represent a potential future for electric mobile living and camping. In fact, this future is already here. That’s right, my friends, what we have before us is a tangible machine that will be available for purchase in early 2024, meaning right now!
So, what can we expect from this remarkable machine? Will it truly excel in exploring the great outdoors? And will it have the capability to take you deep into the wilderness, far away from civilization, with only nature as your companion? It’s time to find out.
Now, let’s start with GMC’s Hummer EV Pickup, which, according to the GMC website, offers an impressive peak range of 381 miles (613 km) in its most optimized version and can generate up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. This refers to the 3x variation.
Enter EarthCruiser – the aspect of this project that I find most fascinating. They are responsible for the construction attached to the back of the Pickup. The cab-over habitat is crafted using carbon fiber, a material chosen for its lightweight and robust properties. This choice, although likely expensive, was essential in order to address one of the main challenges faced by electric vehicles – the significant reduction in range when loaded beyond the manufacturer’s testing weight.
EarthCruiser has truly brought their best game to the table with this material. Just take a look at this masterpiece! Not only does it seamlessly integrate with the rear of the Pickup, but its overall design gives the impression that the Hummer was specifically designed to accommodate it. It’s a perfect match, like the age-old question of whether the chicken or the egg came first. Regardless, it’s undeniably stunning.
But it’s not just about looks. The habitat also boasts a range of functional features. From the lateral storage compartments to the convenient access and the pop-top design, every aspect is optimized to maximize efficiency and ensure survival in case you find yourself stranded in the wilderness without power. If I understood correctly from the manufacturer’s website, it’s even suitable for all four seasons.
Now, in order to access this home on wheels, we need to lower the tailgate, raise the top half of the shell like a tank – fitting, don’t you agree – and enter. Once inside, we will find ourselves in the heart of a living area, dining space, kitchen, and possibly an additional sleeping area, all at the same time. The primary sleeping space is located in the section above the cab.
Although GMC and EarthCruiser have not provided clear and actual images of the interior – only renderings – one individual, known as generalmotorjeff on Instagram, had the opportunity to see this vehicle in person at the Chicago Auto Show. I must say, I am impressed! Make sure to check out the account mentioned below.
In addition to some professional photographs of the exterior of the Pickup, generalmotorjeff also takes us inside, revealing the cabinetry, storage compartments, the kitchen area, and even gives us a sense of the sleeping arrangements. We can also catch a glimpse of the window covers made of ripstop material that are present throughout the upper level of the enclosure.
A few features that are not visible include the refrigerator, storage space under the bed, 460 Ah battery, inverter, onboard water heater, and a few others. We even have access to both filtered and unfiltered water. However, the most appealing feature here is the ability of the habitat to accommodate 605 W of solar power.
However, it is not without flaws, at least in my opinion – feel free to comment on the fact that there are only five gallons (19 liters) of fresh water available, and according to EarthCruiser’s website, this should be sufficient for “off-grid adventures lasting up to seven days.” I believe we will need more water.
Now, at this point, you can reserve your EarthCruiser x Hummer EV for a minimum of $100. It seems that these two teams are trying to gauge interest in this mobile home, and with enough demand, we might just be in for an exciting treat this year.
All that remains now is to wait for a few individuals to embark on their first EV overlanding and off-grid living experiences with this habitat, and see if range anxiety becomes a concern once we see the numbers. Time will reveal everything, including the price of the carbon footprint; no announcements have been made yet.
