Even the most passionate golf enthusiasts may not be familiar with the name Hayden Springer. The 27-year-old hailing from Nashville, Tennessee has yet to achieve a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour and has participated in less than 10 events throughout his career. However, Springer, a rookie on the PGA Tour, has the potential to quickly gain a dedicated following. This is due to his unwavering determination and perseverance. After years of striving, he finally secured full-time status on the PGA Tour in December. Yet, his journey was not without its challenges that would have defeated most individuals.
Springer and his wife Emma tragically lost their 3-year-old daughter Sage on November 13 after a lifelong battle with Trisomy 18, a severe developmental disorder. Sage’s survival was uncertain from the start, with doctors predicting she would not make it out of the hospital or live more than a few weeks. However, she defied the odds and lived for several years before passing away in November. Just one month later, Springer achieved his dream of earning PGA Tour status.
Emma, speaking to PGATour.com after the first round of the final stage of Q-School, shared, “She was a remarkably joyful girl who cherished her life. I believe she inspired joy in many people and brought smiles to their faces. The joy she brought to the world defines her legacy.” Sage’s memory continues to bring happiness to the Springer family.
Upon qualifying for the PGA Tour, Springer couldn’t help but reflect on his daughter. He said, “Whenever I think of her, I can’t help but picture her smiling. It’s a grounding thought that brings me back to a state of calm. In those moments, I’m not thinking about golf or the pressures of the game. I’m solely focused on her and her radiant smile.”
Recently, Springer made his full-time PGA Tour debut at the American Express Championship. And, unsurprisingly, he made quite an impression. In the first round, he carded an outstanding 8-under 64, placing him in sixth position on the leaderboard.
Early-season golf tournaments can sometimes lack excitement, as many top players don’t commence their seasons until a month later. However, if you’re searching for a player to support this weekend, look no further than Hayden Springer.
