The triumph at the ABN AMRO tournament followed his victory at the Australian Open 2024, confirming the impressive progress demonstrated by Jannik Sinner in the latter part of 2023.
The young prodigy garnered immense support from his nation (even from certain inconsistent media outlets that had previously unjustly criticized him), and numerous fans and journalists have also raised inquiries about his personal life.
It is worth highlighting that Jannik never willingly discusses his private affairs and, when he does touch upon the subject, he promptly redirects the conversation. This inclination stems from a desire for privacy that the Italian tennis sensation wishes to safeguard for himself and his loved ones.
This serves as one of Sinner’s well-kept secrets, allowing him to focus solely on his tennis prowess and associating his image primarily with his performance on the court, thereby preventing the media from speculating about his personal sphere.
Jannik yearns for people to recognize him for his achievements on the grandest stages of the ATP Tour and no other reasons.
“I enjoy discussing tennis and sports in general. However, when it comes to my personal life, it’s true that I prefer to keep it that way. I want to shield those closest to me from all of this. I view it as a small responsibility, almost a duty: they have supported me as a young man, helping me build self-confidence, and now I want to shield them in return. Perhaps I’ll address it someday.
But those close to me share my perspective on this matter. We are very much alike: we understand each other with a single glance, in an instant. I simply want to control the things that hinder me from carrying out my job. I avoid anything that may disrupt my peaceful training the following day. However, if I feel like going to the zoo, for instance, I will do so. Off the court, I am just a regular guy,” Sinner revealed in an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair.
🇮🇹 Jannik Sinner, the newfound idol of an entire nation
Jannik Sinner’s inaugural night as a champion in a Grand Slam tournament may not have been the wildest in history, but it offers several evident indications of his mindset. The character of a tennis player with a constant focus on unexplored possibilities.
On the evening he secured his first major victory, Jannik contemplated the future and sought motives to continue progressing and enhancing his personal narrative, penning additional triumphant chapters.
“I refrained from excessive celebration and abstained from alcohol, as it is detrimental to the body. We went out for a meal and then I returned to the hotel. And when did the victory sink in? I had 20 hours on the plane.
I immediately pondered how I could further enhance my game. I questioned why I found myself trailing by two sets to zero and why I didn’t respond sooner. I am a rather focused individual. However, this does not imply that I am not relishing the moment,” he elucidated during the same interview with Vanity Fair.
Once again, the future validated his approach, as Sinner triumphed in Rotterdam and achieved his highest ranking, ascending to the 3rd position in the ATP world rankings. No Italian had ever attained such heights in the Open Era.
“The sensation was truly delightful, of course. However, I did not dwell on it much: at that moment, I could not fully comprehend the magnitude of what had transpired anyway. I watched a few movies and drifted off to sleep!” he disclosed.
“I have always felt entirely Italian and take great pride in my nationality. At the age of 7, I participated in ski championships with Italian children, and at 14, my classmates in Liguria were Italian. However, we speak our German dialect, just as in Sicily they speak a dialect that is unintelligible in other parts of Italy, correct?” Sinner remarked before shifting his focus to his place of residence.
“The Principality is an exceedingly secure location, boasting numerous fellow tennis players with whom I can train, impeccable courts, and splendid facilities. I have always believed it would be an ideal place to reside.”
Sinner’s response was prompted by a question regarding the provocation posed by renowned journalist Aldo Cazzullo, who raised the possibility of Sinner serving as the flag bearer for Italy at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“Here, it is not a matter of athletic evaluation but rather one of moral judgment. No one disputes Sinner’s extraordinary prowess and his status as a good-natured and well-mannered young man. However, if we regard him as a source of Italian pride and a role model for society, then the fact that this young man will represent Italian sports in the years to come without making any financial contributions to the community to which he belongs becomes problematic,” Cazzullo wrote.
