Golf is a sport with strict regulations and severe consequences for violating them. Jordan Spieth, a prominent PGA Tour player, learned this lesson in a particularly harsh manner on Friday.
During the Genesis Invitational, Spieth made a grave error by signing and submitting an inaccurate scorecard. As a result, he has been disqualified from the tournament.
Spieth mistakenly recorded a score of 3 for a hole where he actually made a 4.
This unfortunate incident marks the end of a disappointing day for Jordan. Despite starting the tournament strongly, his performance took a downturn.
On Thursday, Spieth came close to completing the first nine holes in 29 shots, narrowly missing a putt that would have put him at 30. He finished the round with a score of -5, keeping him in contention.
However, today’s round for the three-time major champion was uneventful until the final hole. A double bogey on the 18th hole resulted in a total score of 73 (+2). Little did he know that things would take an even worse turn than a double bogey.
The issue arose on the 4th hole, a par 3 with a distance of 245 yards. Spieth failed to hit the green and veered to the left. Nevertheless, he executed an incredible recovery shot that landed him within four feet of the hole, setting up a potential par and a chance to gain momentum early in the round. Unfortunately, he missed the putt and settled for a bogey. It was a straightforward four-shot hole, nothing out of the ordinary.
Whether it was an attempt to forget his missed putt or not, Spieth mistakenly signed his scorecard for a three. Clearly, signing a card with a score better than what was actually achieved is against the rules and carries a penalty of disqualification. If a player signs for a score higher than their actual performance, the only consequence is that the higher score stands.
This incident added to the already eventful day at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Tournament host Tiger Woods withdrew from the competition during his second round. Given his history of injuries, many assumed it was due to physical discomfort. However, it turned out that Woods was suffering from a stomach illness, which caused dizziness and dehydration.
As a result, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Tiger Woods will not be participating in the weekend rounds of this prestigious early-season PGA event.
