News emerged on Wednesday that former MLB star Lenny Dykstra was hospitalized following a stroke. Now, some of his former teammates are providing an update on his health condition. Darryl Strawberry and Kevin Mitchell, both members of the 1986 World Series-winning New York Mets, shared details on Dykstra’s progress. According to The New York Post, they have spoken to Dykstra and disclosed that he has been transferred out of the intensive care unit and is currently recuperating in a Los Angeles hospital.
Strawberry expressed relief, stating, “He recognized me, which is certainly an encouraging sign. He is currently in the recovery phase.” Dykstra, known by his nickname “Nails,” was a prominent figure in several exceptional MLB teams over the past four decades. Notably, he was a key player in the legendary ’86 Mets and was also part of the ’93 Phillies, who narrowly missed securing a World Series championship against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dykstra’s close friend, Mitchell, emphasized the importance of self-care as one ages. Mitchell shared, “Although he is resting, he remains true to his lively personality. As we grow older, it becomes imperative to prioritize our well-being. I advised him to take better care of himself and not let stress affect him. He has endured numerous challenges, and I hold him dear to my heart.”
While there is limited information regarding the estimated duration of Dykstra’s recovery, Mitchell mentioned that the 61-year-old is projected to remain in the hospital until at least the following week.
