The period in which the England International spent at Manchester City was far from successful. The 28-year-old struggled to secure a place in the team’s lineup and instead became a regular presence on the bench. Throughout his time with Pep Guardiola, he only managed to make 31 appearances, starting a mere 6 games over the course of 2 seasons. Recently, Guardiola offered an apology for a comment he made earlier, in which he criticized Phillips’ weight.
Phillips’ difficulties in fitting in and the harsh remark from Pep Guardiola encapsulated his tenure with the champions. During a recent interview, the manager was questioned about whether he regretted his comment. Guardiola responded by expressing remorse for his words. He also emphasized that he had already clarified the matter with Phillips before disclosing it to the press.
Furthermore, the City boss affirmed that he never announces such matters in front of the press without first discussing them with the player(s) involved. As for Phillips, despite his 2 seasons and 31 appearances, the midfielder now finds himself on loan to Aston Villa. Unfortunately, his fortunes have yet to improve, as his first four games have been rather average. To make matters worse, his most recent game against Nottingham Forest resulted in a sending-off. This leads fans to ponder who the true loser is in this situation: City, who paid $55 million, or Phillips, who wasted crucial years of his career?
No manager or team should make the mistake of underestimating Manchester City in the Premier League title race. The club has consistently demonstrated that it somehow manages to achieve its objectives when it matters most. The stage was set perfectly for City on Saturday as the defending champions faced off against Chelsea. A victory would have allowed the club to surpass Liverpool with a game in hand.
However, City dropped points at home and now sees Liverpool hold a four-point lead. Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola asserted that the draw has not added pressure to his players. He stated,
City’s upcoming matches present a relatively straightforward run of games against Brentford, Bournemouth, and Luton Town before facing Manchester United at home. As it currently stands, this year’s Premier League title will be contested by three teams, with either Man City, Liverpool, or Arsenal lifting the trophy. With Jurgen Klopp’s departure confirmed, it will be up to City to spoil the dream farewell for the boys from Anfield.
