Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has refuted claims that Manchester United have placed a price tag of £34 million ($42.9 million) on forward Mason Greenwood, who has been linked with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Romano believes that the Red Devils will only prioritize transfers once they have appointed a sporting director.
On Tuesday (February 20), a report from German outlet fussball.news suggested that Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford was uncertain. The Englishman, who has one cap for the national team, was loaned out to La Liga side Getafe at the beginning of the 2023-24 season and it is reported that United want to permanently offload him when his loan deal expires on June 30. The report also indicated that they would be willing to accept a bid of £34 million ($42.9 million) for the 22-year-old.
Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United will expire in June 2025, which means that the club will need to sell him in the upcoming summer transfer window in order to recover some of the money they invested in him. Additionally, since Greenwood came through their academy, United will be able to include 100% of the funds generated from his sale in their profits. This could help them meet the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
According to Express, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, two of the biggest clubs in La Liga, are monitoring Greenwood’s situation and may make a move for him when the transfer window opens in July. Getafe, the club where Greenwood is currently on loan, also want to keep the player but are unable to afford his weekly salary of $75,000.
In his Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Romano made it clear that Manchester United have not set a specific asking price for Greenwood. He stated that the club is currently focused on establishing a structure and will only make decisions on transfers, including Greenwood’s future, after appointing a director.
Since joining Getafe last summer, Greenwood has performed impressively. He has appeared in 24 games across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing five assists.
