Naomi Osaka confessed that she felt a sense of disappointment following her loss to Danielle Collins in Abu Dhabi, which marked her third consecutive defeat since her return to tennis after giving birth. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, had hoped to find her rhythm and secure a couple of victories at the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi, but her plans did not go as expected. In the first round, she was defeated by Collins, the finalist of the 2022 Australian Open, with a score of 7-5 6-0.
Prior to her participation in Abu Dhabi, Osaka had defeated Tamara Korpatsch in the first round of the Brisbane International, but then suffered losses to Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Garcia in subsequent matches at the same tournament and the Australian Open, respectively.
In an interview with AFP, Osaka admitted to being self-critical, stating, “I say some pretty harsh words about myself. I know the word, but if I say it, it sounds really bad. I felt a little like a ‘failure’, but I don’t want to be too harsh.”
Despite her disappointing singles performance in Abu Dhabi, Osaka teamed up with Ons Jabeur for a doubles match later in the day. However, their partnership did not yield positive results, as they were defeated 6-3 6-3 by Magda Linette and Bernarda Pera.
After experiencing three consecutive losses in singles matches and one in doubles, Osaka acknowledged that her confidence had taken a hit. She stated, “I’m less confident but I’m not too unconfident to think that I can’t play really good tennis. I really think I just need to get through a really tough match and then sort of acknowledge that that’s going to happen quite a couple of times.”
Reflecting on her match against Collins, Osaka identified a pivotal moment in the late stages of the first set. Despite holding a 5-4 lead without any breaks, Collins managed to secure a break in the 11th game, ultimately winning the match in straight sets after a string of nine consecutive game victories.
Initially, Osaka displayed competitiveness and played well. However, once she fell behind due to a break, her game completely faltered. Osaka emphasized the need to prevent such a breakdown from occurring in the future, stating, “Everyone around me is telling me I’m playing well and I don’t think I’m playing bad. I just need to believe in myself more and I think as soon as I got broken my belief dipped a lot.”
When Osaka made her comeback in Australia, there were no expectations or pressure for her to achieve significant results in her first tournaments after a 16-month hiatus. While it was assumed that Osaka could play freely and without stress, given her extended break, she admitted to feeling “frustrated” and “upset” after her first-round loss to Garcia at the Australian Open. Osaka also expressed her desire to make her time away from her six-month-old daughter Shai count by winning matches.
Osaka had higher aspirations than reaching the round of 16 in Brisbane and losing in the first round of the Australian Open, as going 1-2 in Australia did not meet her expectations. She also revealed her “delusional” belief that she could instantly win these tournaments.
“The competitor in me is really frustrated that I’m not winning these matches, of course,” Osaka remarked after her Australian Open defeat. “So I wouldn’t say this comeback is how I thought because I’m delusional enough to think I could have won the tournament. I think my delusion is what allows me to win the tournaments. I think I just have to keep living day by day and training hard and playing a lot more matches, and hopefully my dreams will come true.”
Following her loss at the Australian Open, Osaka accepted a wildcard entry into the Abu Dhabi tournament as a means to regain her form and rhythm after her early exit in Melbourne. Unfortunately, her time in Abu Dhabi did not provide the desired boost in confidence or a significant result. However, Osaka will not have to wait long for her next opportunity to secure victories, as she is set to participate in a WTA 1000 tournament in Doha next week, utilizing her protected ranking to enter.
In Doha, Osaka will face a challenging task in achieving a strong result, as numerous top players will be competing in the opening WTA 1000 event of the year. Nevertheless, a successful performance in Doha could greatly enhance Osaka’s confidence.
