Reflecting on the past with a sense of sadness rather than anger, we recall that Mercedes-Benz made the decision to discontinue the AMG GT Roadster, S-Class Cabriolet, SLC, and the open-top versions of the C-Class and E-Class recently. However, there is some solace in knowing that the latter two models now have a spiritual successor – the previously announced CLE Cabriolet series. Mercedes-Benz pledges to uphold their long-standing tradition of creating convertible cars that allow four individuals to experience the sensation of wind blowing through their hair. Although not at high speeds, thanks to the inclusion of features such as the acoustic soft top, Aircap, Airscarf, and other comfortable amenities.
Naturally, the CLE Cabriolet is built upon the foundation of the existing CLE Coupe series. Mercedes-Benz assures that, at least in Europe, the convertible variant will be available for summer escapades as orders are already being accepted, with the first deliveries scheduled for late April 2024, specifically in the Old Continent. Furthermore, the pricing details have already been disclosed – in Germany, the starting prices for the CLE Cabriolet range from 66,402 euros, which equates to $71,469 based on the current exchange rate. Undoubtedly, it is a substantial investment, but one that should come as no surprise.
In an effort to ensure that the occupants are undisturbed, Mercedes-Benz has implemented various enhancements, including the Aircap electric wind deflector system and the Airscarf headroom heating system, both of which come as standard features. The soft fabric (acoustic) top can be customized to match the body color, with options available in black, red, or grey. Additionally, it takes a mere 20 seconds to open or close the top, and this can be done at speeds of up to 60 kph (37 mph). Inside the CLE Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz has equipped it with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch portrait central display that is oriented towards the driver.
One notable feature of the central display is the ability to adjust its tilt electronically, ranging from 15 to 40 degrees. This adjustment prevents glare from the sun when the soft top is stowed away. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz has treated the seats with a special coating that reflects near-infrared radiation from the sun. As a result, the leather remains 12 degrees cooler during hot summer days. The available leather and Nappa leather options include black, macchiato beige/black, tonka brown/black, power red/black, and white/black. The standard Avantgarde Line comes equipped with black Artico/Microcut leather.
In Europe, the CLE Cabriolet offers three powertrain options. All of them feature mild hybrid technology. The CLE 200 variant, which delivers 201 horsepower, is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The starting price for this model is 68,782 euros or $74,024. The CLE 200 AWD version accelerates from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds, while the RWD variant achieves the same speed in 8 seconds. The CLE 220d, powered by a 197 horsepower diesel engine, has the same starting price as the CLE 200 AWD and offers similar performance specifications, albeit with a slightly lower combined fuel consumption.
