When it comes to being street-legal, the ZL1 is clearly the top choice if you’re in the market for a flagship Camaro. It offers everything you could possibly want or need from a powerful car, and then some. Surprisingly, it also performs exceptionally well on a race track, which is not something you can say about the Challenger Hellcat, for example.
In terms of its performance, the ZL1 is equipped with a 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 engine that delivers an impressive 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. This is essentially the same engine found in the previous generation C7 Corvette Z06, allowing the Camaro to reach 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and complete a quarter mile in a little over 11 seconds.
However, there are those who require an even faster quarter mile time, and unless you’re willing to make extensive modifications yourself, GM has provided a factory-option in the form of the latest-generation COPO Camaro, a limited edition drag car that is not street-legal.
The 2023 variant of the COPO Camaro boasts a new engine compared to the previous 2022 model. This new engine, known as the COPO 632, produces an impressive 1,004 horsepower and 872 lb-ft of torque using regular 93 octane pump gas, all without the need for a supercharger.
The specific COPO Camaro being showcased here is the 43rd example produced for the 2023 model year, and it recently sold for $147,000.
Visually, this car stands out with its cowl-induction hood, side mirror delete, wheelie bars, parachute, and a set of 15″ Bogart wheels wrapped in Hoosier drag racing slicks. Underneath the surface, it features Strange Engineering calipers on all four corners and a four-link suspension setup with adjustable coilovers.
As expected, the interior of this COPO Camaro is fully customized for drag racing. It includes a safety cage, COPO-branded bucket seats with five-point harnesses, driver-side netting, dash-mounted switchgear, a Hurst Quarter Stick pistol-grip shifter, and auxiliary gauges for fuel pressure, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and transmission fluid temperature.
Now, let’s talk about that impressive 632 ci V8 engine. We’ve already mentioned its incredible power output, but it’s worth noting some of its other specifications as well. It comes equipped with a Meziere electric water pump, PWR aluminum radiator, trunk-mounted fuel cell, and an ATI Performance Products three-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.
So, just how fast is this car? Well, a Challenger Demon 170 can complete a quarter mile in approximately 8.9 seconds, if everything goes perfectly. The 2023 COPO Camaro? It’s even faster, by a significant margin.
