Scottie Scheffler is participating in the TPC Scottsdale tournament this week as the consecutive defending champion of the WM Phoenix Open. While some players struggle in the lively atmosphere in the desert, it’s safe to say Scheffler thrives in it, and it turns out he has a group of adolescents to thank for that.
Scheffler may hold the top ranking in the world and possess a prestigious green jacket from Augusta National, but the combination of festivities and taunting on the Par 3 16th at TPC Scottsdale is unparalleled in the sport. The taunting doesn’t bother Scheffler, though, because evidently he practices while constantly being taunted.
Similar to the 16th hole being far from safe, the driving range is also not exempt, even for the most skilled player on the planet.
“I’m quite accustomed to the taunting,” Scheffler stated. “Where I practice at home, I have a solid group of individuals with whom I play golf, and I am frequently subjected to taunting. When I’m practicing on the range, there’s typically a group of youngsters aged 10 to 15 who incessantly ridicule me, so taunting is something I am quite familiar with.”
A group of undoubtedly privileged teenagers, who are chauffeured to the country club in their mothers’ G-Wagons, harassing the world’s best player is genuinely a comical scenario to envision.
Maybe this is the secret to improving as a golfer – having a group of kids pester you while you practice.
If you can concentrate while kids are shouting at you, then you can certainly navigate through the 50,000 inebriated fans meandering around TPC Scottsdale.
Scheffler achieved par on all four visits to the Par 3 16th last year on his way to a two-shot victory; he has undoubtedly figured things out.
