Leeds United’s Leo Hjelde, a defender aged 20, has completed a permanent transfer to Sunderland towards the end of the transfer window.
In an interview, Hjelde expressed his relief at finalizing the deal and his current focus on personal growth through consistent game time.
During his time at Leeds, Hjelde struggled to secure regular appearances on the field, prompting his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere. The promising young Norwegian defender has a bright future ahead and made a positive impression during his debut for Sunderland.
Hjelde disclosed that he patiently awaited a transfer and remained prepared for the opportunity when it presented itself. While he gained valuable experience playing for Leeds’ under-21 team, he desired to compete at a higher level.
In an interview with the Sunderland Echo, Hjelde stated, “I was anticipating a move. It was simply a matter of being patient. I was getting playing time with Leeds’ under-21s, which ensured my fitness for whenever the chance arose. Although it came quite late, I’m genuinely delighted it happened, and I’m ready to move forward.”
The timing of Hjelde’s move to Sunderland aligns perfectly with his aspirations, and he hopes to establish himself in the Championship as a member of the Black Cats.
