In 2023, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a satisfactory season, finishing with a 10-7 record and securing a spot in the playoffs. However, they face significant weaknesses, particularly at the quarterback position.
Kenny Pickett, a first-round draft selection in 2022, had another underwhelming season. After suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 13, Mitchell Trubisky took over as the starting quarterback for the next two games. Unfortunately, Trubisky’s performance in both contests was subpar, resulting in losses for the team.
On Monday, it was announced by the Steelers that they have decided to release Trubisky, as reported by Adam Schefter.
Trubisky, who was the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, was initially seen as a potential franchise quarterback for the team. The Bears had long been in search of a truly exceptional quarterback, with their last great one being Sid Luckman in the 1940s. Despite winning the Super Bowl in the 1985 season, Bears fans had endured a prolonged period of quarterback struggles.
During his rookie season, Trubisky recorded seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. The following year, he displayed promise by throwing for 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning him a Pro Bowl selection. However, he has not been able to replicate that level of performance since then. Trubisky went on to join the Buffalo Bills for the 2021 season before eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the subsequent year.
Trubisky is now a free agent and could potentially serve as a capable backup for numerous teams in a league that has witnessed several quarterback injuries in recent years.
