Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back William Gay has been hired as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Gay, who played for the Steelers from 2007-2011 and again from 2013-2017, will join former Steelers defensive back Jason Simmons on Washington’s coaching staff. Simmons will serve as the team’s defensive pass game coordinator. Gay started four games in 2008 when the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl title. After leaving the Steelers in 2017, Gay attended training camp with the New York Giants but did not make the team. He later served as a coaching intern for the Steelers in 2019 and coached defensive backs at Missouri State in 2020. Gay was also a Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship hire for the Dallas Cowboys in 2022, working under Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. Gay recorded 86 starts, 81 pass defenses, and 11 interceptions during his time with the Steelers.
