The Phoenix Suns have made another move in the buyout market, and they’re not done yet. According to a report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns have signed Thaddeus Young. But their sights are set on another target – Danilo Gallinari. The Arizona Republic’s Duane Rankin revealed that the Suns have shown interest in Gallinari, who was recently released by the Detroit Pistons.
Gallinari has had stints with both the Pistons and the Washington Wizards this season. Although his scoring numbers have dipped, he still brings value as a big man who can stretch the floor. In 32 games, he has averaged 7.3 points with a true shooting percentage of 61.9%.
The Suns had two roster spots available after acquiring Royce O’Neale and David Roddy, and they have already filled one with the signing of Young. Adding Gallinari would provide the Suns with much-needed spacing in their frontcourt, which is currently lacking outside of Kevin Durant.
Interestingly, Suns center Jusuf Nurkic has publicly urged Gallinari to join the team. Nurkic, who played alongside Gallinari during their time with the Denver Nuggets, reached out to him on social media, referring to him as “brother” in their native Bosnian language.
If Gallinari were to join the Suns, it would reunite him with Nurkic and provide a familiar face in the locker room. Although they never made the playoffs together in Denver, both players have since experienced success in the postseason. Nurkic was part of the Portland Trail Blazers team that reached the Western Conference Finals in 2019, while Gallinari played a key role in the Atlanta Hawks’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
In the meantime, Rankin also shared some insight on Thaddeus Young, describing him as a “great” guy and a “total pro” who can still contribute to the team. With these recent additions, the Suns are bolstering their roster and positioning themselves for a deep playoff run.
