The Asian Tour 2024 commences with the IRS Prima Malaysian Open, which is set to take place from February 15th to 18th at The Mines Resort & Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. One of the participants in this tournament is Stefano Mazzoli, who will be making his debut after securing his place on the circuit in January during the Qualifying School finals in Thailand, where he achieved an eighth-place finish.
The competition will feature eight out of the top ten players from the 2023 money list, all of whom have previously won tournaments. These players include Miguel Tabuena from the Philippines (ranked 2nd), Gaganjeet Bhullar from India (ranked 3rd), Travis Smyth from Australia (ranked 4th), Ben Campbell from New Zealand (ranked 5th), Phachara Khongwatmai and Poom Saksansin from Thailand (ranked 6th and 7th respectively), David Puig from Spain (ranked 8th), and Taichi Koh from Hong Kong (ranked 9th).
The field also consists of several competitors who have previously participated in the DP World Tour and have even claimed titles. Some notable names among them are Kiradech Aphibarnarat and Thaworn Wiratchant from Thailand (with 4 and 3 titles respectively), Sam Horsfield from England (with 3 titles), SSP Chawrasia and Jeev Milkha Singh from India (with 4 titles each), Jeunghun Wang from Korea (with 3 titles), and Marcus Fraser and Wade Ormsby from Australia (with 3 and 1 title respectively).
Additionally, it is worth keeping an eye on Shiwan Kim from the United States, who led the Asian Tour 2022 order of merit, as well as John Catlin, Jazz Janewattananond from Thailand, Brendan Jones from Australia, and Gavin Green from Malaysia. All of these players have the potential to compete at a high level.
Stefano Mazzoli, a 27-year-old golfer from Segrate, is embarking on a new professional journey in a circuit where he previously participated in the PIF Saudi International last year. In that tournament, which was won by Mexican golfer Abraham Ancer, Mazzoli finished in 42nd place. With three victories on the Alps Tour (Red Sea Little Venice Open 2020, Antognolla Alps Open 2021, Ein Bay Open 2022) and one in the PGAI Championship (2021), Mazzoli has an impressive track record. He has also achieved success as an amateur, including being part of the winning team in the European Boys’ championship in 2014 and winning the Individual European Championship in 2015.
