The Los Angeles Clippers are facing a dilemma.
Experienced forward/center P.J. Tucker is dissatisfied with his current circumstances.
Tucker has made it clear that he wants to be traded by the trade deadline, but either there were no interested parties or no favorable deals were on the table.
Despite his limited playing time this season, Tucker firmly believes he can make a valuable contribution to a championship contender.
In response, coach Tyronn Lue playfully acknowledged Tucker’s frustration, jokingly referring to him as “70 years old” and suggesting he could retire and enjoy his golden years. However, Tucker’s desire to continue playing and competing remains unwavering (via NBA Central).
“When you have individuals like PJ, who still have a year remaining on their contract, they could retire and enjoy their golden years. But they still want to play, they still want to compete. And you understand the importance of having players like that.”
– Ty Lue on PJ Tucker
The former NBA champion has completely fallen out of the team’s rotation.
Typically, out of respect, teams honor the wishes of veteran players, as no championship team wants a disgruntled player disrupting the locker room chemistry.
However, Tucker currently finds himself at a crossroads.
He will not be released from his contract, and trading him is no longer an option.
Therefore, his only recourse to play this season is to agree to a buyout, even if it means sacrificing some of his hard-earned money.
