Shion Homma is an electrifying talent currently representing Club Brugge in Belgium. Joining the team in 2022, the winger was acquired from J-League side Albirex Niigata. Homma initially played for Brugge’s youth team, Club NXT.
Making his debut for Club NXT in 2022, he primarily played with the youth team while occasionally featuring for the first team. In the current season, he finally received opportunities and has played three games for Brugge thus far.
One of Homma’s standout moments with Club NXT this season was when he scored a goal against SK Beveren. Positioned on the left wing, the Japanese forward skillfully maneuvered past his opponent and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper, finding the back of the net. However, as he celebrated his goal, he accidentally collided with a pole that supported the goal’s net.

The team’s physiotherapist quickly rushed onto the field with an ice pack, which was applied to Homma’s now-swollen forehead. With a smile, he returned to the pitch. Homma’s goal contributed to Club NXT’s second goal of the match, ultimately securing their victory.
Throughout the history of the sport, numerous players have injured themselves while celebrating goals. One of the most memorable incidents occurred in 1993, when Steve Morrow of Arsenal was celebrating their League Cup triumph. Morrow was lifted onto Tony Adams’ shoulders, but unfortunately slipped and fell, breaking his arm.
Another example involves Swiss player Paulo Diogo, who was playing for Servette FC at the time. While attempting to celebrate with the fans, he leaped onto the barrier separating the crowd from the pitch. However, as he dismounted, his left ring finger was accidentally severed. In addition, he received a yellow card for time-wasting as he and the stewards searched for his finger.
Nicolai Muller of Hamburg also suffered an injury during a goal celebration. After scoring in the 8th minute of a match against Augsburg, he performed a few twirls but stumbled and fell after tripping on the corner flag. This resulted in a ruptured right Anterior Cruciate Ligament, sidelining him for seven months.
Even Zlatan Ibrahimovic has experienced injury while celebrating. In 2010, while playing for AC Milan, he admitted feeling “tired and worn-out”. Just two days after making that statement, he injured his arm while performing a fist-pump. Despite the injury, he played the full 90 minutes.
