Jon Rahm’s choice to join LIV Golf has sparked a new round of discussion about the PGA Tour’s uncertain future. Many are concerned that more top players will follow suit in pursuit of the lucrative paycheck Rahm will receive. While Viktor Hovland doesn’t seem inclined to make the switch, he didn’t hold back in expressing his grievances during a recent interview.
Currently ranked fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings, Hovland has quickly become one of the most promising and likeable young talents on the PGA Tour. The 26-year-old Norwegian had an impressive 2022-23 season, winning three tournaments and claiming the $18 million prize for winning the FedEx Cup at East Lake Golf Club in August.
Since joining the PGA Tour in 2020, Hovland has earned over $26 million through his performances on the course. While he has chosen to remain with the organization instead of joining LIV Golf, he made it clear in a recent podcast appearance that he is not satisfied with the current state of affairs.
During the podcast, Hovland dismissed the idea that joining LIV Golf would make him a better golfer, effectively ending any discussion on the matter. He acknowledged that he understands why some players choose to make that move but then shifted his focus to criticizing the management of the PGA Tour. Although he didn’t mention commissioner Jay Monahan by name, he criticized the management’s handling of the tour and their view of the players as mere labor rather than valued members.
Hovland went on to reveal that behind closed doors, the management makes decisions that prioritize their own interests rather than those of the players. He accused them of arrogance and disregarding the players’ best interests. It’s clear that Hovland has strong feelings about the matter.
