San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been officially ruled out for the remainder of Super Bowl LVIII due to an Achilles injury, as reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Greenlaw was transported off the field after sustaining a non-contact injury in the second quarter. While jogging onto the field, video footage captured him falling to the ground. Shortly after, Greenlaw was taken to the medical tent and subsequently carted off.
The linebacker, who has been with the 49ers for five years, concluded the game with three tackles. Greenlaw’s absence will be deeply felt by the 49ers’ defense, particularly in the middle of the field where he partners with Fred Warner. Throughout the 2023 regular season, he recorded 120 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 4 defensed passes, along with two interceptions during San Francisco’s playoff run.
At halftime, the 49ers were leading the Chiefs with a score of 10-3.
Greenlaw was selected by the 49ers from Arkansas in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. During the Divisional Round and NFC Championship victories over the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, respectively, the 26-year-old contributed a total of 15 tackles. In Super Bowl LIV, when the Niners and Chiefs previously faced off, the 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker recorded four tackles.
