Luis Suarez is a revered figure at FC Barcelona, having won every possible trophy during his time there, including a Treble in his very first season. In his second season with the club, he won the European Golden Boot and played a vital role in securing the La Liga title four times. However, his remarkable legacy at the Catalan club almost didn’t happen due to a controversial incident.
In an interview with DelSol 99.5, a radio station in Uruguay, Suarez revealed that he was on the verge of joining Barcelona’s arch-rivals, Real Madrid. After a strong 2013/14 season with Liverpool, where he scored 31 goals in the Premier League and provided 17 assists, Madrid seemed to be the favorites to sign him.
Real Madrid was even willing to sell Suarez to Arsenal, a club that was also interested in signing the Uruguayan striker. The pursuit of Suarez by Madrid was intense until the infamous bite incident during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
During a World Cup match against Italy, Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini, resulting in a four-month suspension from FIFA. However, FC Barcelona decided to enter the race for Suarez’s signature. He was given the choice between the two clubs and ultimately chose to join the Catalan giants.

Luis Suarez has confirmed that he will retire at Inter Miami, considering it to be his final destination in his football career. The 37-year-old striker joined the MLS club from Brazilian side Gremio in December 2023. He has been reunited with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba at the Miami-based club.
Suarez began his professional career with Uruguayan side Nacional but rose to prominence during his time at Ajax. In his four seasons with the Amsterdam club, he scored 111 goals across all competitions before making a move to Liverpool.
During his time at Liverpool, Suarez established himself as one of the best players in the league, consistently finding the back of the net. In the 2013/14 season, he was directly involved in 42 goals in the Premier League, which caught the attention of Barcelona. Following his stint at Barcelona, Suarez had spells at Atletico Madrid, Nacional, Gremio, and now finds himself at Inter Miami.
