Maria Sakkari mocks thoughtless opinion on Greek tennis.
A day after both Greek tennis players dropped out of the Top-10 in their respective world rankings, a Greek tennis outlet criticized the situation on social media, referring to it as a ‘historic low’. Maria Sakkari, however, was not pleased with this negative comment and criticized the Greek outlet for its lack of thoughtfulness.
Tsitsipas and Sakkari had previously secured their positions in the Top 10 of the ATP and WTA rankings. However, they were pushed out of the elite top when the updated rankings were released on Monday.
It is worth noting that the new rankings ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’ streak of over four and a half years as an elite Top 10 player, since he first made the list in March 2019. Similarly, Sakkari dropped from the Top 10 for the first time in two and a half years.
A Greek tennis outlet on X referred to the misfortune of the duo as a historic low for Greek tennis in recent times.
Did you think about this before writing it? This kind of tennis won’t progress in our country. It’s laughable!
Interestingly, Maria Sakkari did not take the comment well and criticized the reporting page for its thoughtless writing.
With that being said, both Greek players now hold the 11th position in their respective world rankings. Maria Sakkari hopes to make a strong comeback at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championship, while Tsitsipas competes at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico.
Despite recent disappointing setbacks, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari remain the highest-ranked players from Greece.
Both players have previously reached their career high of World No. 3 in their respective rankings. Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the final of the Australian Open, two years after reaching his first Grand Slam final at the French Open.
Maria Sakkari’s best performance in a major tournament was in 2021, when she reached the semifinals of the US Open and French Open. She became the first Greek women’s player to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam. Last year, she also won her first WTA Masters 1000 in Guadalajara.
