The San Diego Padres have suffered losses in terms of key players during the offseason. This is part of their strategy to reduce expenses, and they have largely succeeded in doing so. They have traded away notable players such as Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, and have also seen the departure of Blake Snell, Seth Lugo, Josh Hader, Gary Sanchez, and Nick Martinez to free agency. However, this doesn’t mean that they haven’t made additions to their roster. They have acquired Yuki Matsui, Wandy Peralta, and Woo-Suk Go through signings, as well as players like Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vazquez, Drew Thorpe, Kyle Higashioka, and Enyel De Los Santos through trades. Most recently, they have added another player to their 2024 roster, someone who has been with the organization for the majority of the past four years. According to MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell, the Padres have reportedly reached a deal with infielder/outfielder Jurickson Profar. Profar, who was once considered a highly promising prospect in baseball, has not quite lived up to the immense expectations placed upon him in his youth. Nevertheless, his versatility and surprising power have allowed him to establish a career for himself. In the previous season, split between the Padres and the Colorado Rockies, he achieved a batting average of .242, an on-base percentage of .321, and a slugging percentage of .368, along with nine home runs in 125 games. Profar is capable of playing multiple positions both in the infield and the outfield, and he possesses a good eye for drawing walks. However, his ability to make consistent contact is not always reliable, resulting in a career OPS of .706. Nonetheless, he is a valuable utility player for any team, and his periods of exceptional performance are often memorable. The Padres are hopeful that he can provide at least average offensive production, as this would make him a valuable asset to the team.
