Well, here we are. It’s that time of year when the Super Bowl has just concluded and we’re all sitting here, waiting for the new league year to start in a month.
During this lull, there will be a lot of speculation about upcoming free agents and potential trades once teams are permitted to make them. With that in mind, here are five trades that should happen.
Trade 1:
The Chargers have a significant financial burden with Mack’s massive $38.5 million cap hit in 2024. On the other hand, the Lions are in desperate need of another edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson. Mack, coming off a 17 sack season, would provide the Lions with another top-tier pass rusher to take pressure off Hutchinson and bolster their defense. While the return for the Chargers may not be extravagant, receiving a couple of Day Three picks is better than nothing.
Trade 2:
This next trade may be unexpected, but adding Dotson to the Chiefs’ offense would be quite exciting. Despite facing challenges with receivers like Kadarius Toney and Richie James, Patrick Mahomes managed to make the best of the situation. Dotson had a somewhat disappointing year after an impressive rookie season in Washington. Acquiring him for a Day Three pick would be a low-risk, high-reward move for the Chiefs, potentially providing them with a reliable slot receiver.
Trade 3:
Now, let’s address the most glaring issue on the list. The Steelers undeniably have a quarterback dilemma, with Kenny Pickett being the only quarterback on the roster, and unfortunately, he’s not very good at football. After releasing backup Mitch Trubisky and with third-stringer Mason Rudolph likely to sign elsewhere, the Steelers urgently need an upgrade at quarterback. Fields would excel in Arthur Smith’s system, although it is a risk to trade for a relatively inexperienced player. However, it’s also a risk to start a player who everyone knows can’t perform. Taking a chance on Fields with his higher potential upside would be a wise move for the Steelers.
Trade 4:
This trade would be incredibly exciting. Pairing Reddick with Will Anderson on the opposite side would be a nightmare for opposing teams. Similar to the Lions’ acquisition of Mack, this trade would unite a young, up-and-coming star with a veteran star who demands significant attention. Although Jonathan Greenard, who had a career-high 12.5 sacks, is set to become a free agent, Reddick would be an upgrade and a valuable addition for the team.
Trade 5:
The Bills should waste no time reaching out to the 49ers and exploring the possibility of acquiring their star receiver. Gabe Davis, who is a free agent, may not be worth the investment for the Bills. While his blocking abilities are commendable, he had several games where he caught only one or zero passes. The Bills are in need of a true playmaker at receiver, and Aiyuk would seamlessly step in as their top target. Stefon Diggs showed signs of decline towards the end of the season, with fewer standout performances and a slump in his performance. Bringing in Aiyuk as the primary receiver, while still utilizing Diggs as a reliable second option, would be a significant boost for the Bills’ offense. They would still have work to do, but this trade would be a major accomplishment for them.
