San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made an announcement on Wednesday stating that he has terminated the employment of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
Wilks served as the interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers last season before joining the 49ers for one season. Prior to that, he was the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2018.
A tweet by Chris Williamson highlighted that Steve Wilks’ defense only allowed one touchdown in regulation with Patrick Mahomes as the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback. The touchdown was a result of a fumbled punt deep into San Francisco’s territory. Despite this, Wilks has been let go from his position.
Another tweet by Josina Anderson questions the journey of Steve Wilks, going from being a defensive coordinator in the Super Bowl, losing a game-changing player, holding the Chiefs without a touchdown until late in the third quarter, and ultimately being relieved of his duties with no other opportunities available.
In light of the Super Bowl, it was evident that Kyle Shanahan was not satisfied with the defensive strategy, particularly with regards to the timeout. Therefore, the decision to fire Steve Wilks does not come as a major surprise.
