Kansas City Police disclosed on Friday that three individuals are facing charges related to firearms. However, none of these charges are directly linked to the victims of the shooting that occurred during the Chiefs parade on Wednesday.
According to The Kansas City Star, charges have been filed against two minors.
These two teenagers are currently detained at a juvenile detention center due to their involvement in firearms-related offenses and resisting arrest. These offenses are connected to the mass shooting that resulted in the death of one woman and the injury of 22 others.
Because of the suspects’ ages, many documents pertaining to the case, as well as their names, are not currently available to the public.
This may change if the final list of charges against the suspects leads to a mandatory certification hearing. This hearing will determine whether they should be tried as adults in court, particularly if murder charges are included.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker stated, “We anticipate attending future hearings concerning the individuals who were charged today in Family Court. We will continue to collaborate closely with all authorities as the investigation progresses.”
Earlier reports of a third individual being detained were accurate, but that person was subsequently released.
Another individual, Jose L. Castillo, is facing a criminal charge for picking up a black Glock 22 from the ground amidst the chaos.
It is important to note that Castillo is not suspected of being a shooter. However, due to his status as a felon, he has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, as reported by KMBC News.
A witness informed the police that they observed Castillo picking up a gun that was dropped by one of the individuals involved in a fight prior to the shooting. Castillo then walked away with the firearm in his possession.
Castillo claimed that he believed the gun might have belonged to a law enforcement officer and intended to return it to the police. However, he was arrested before he had the opportunity to do so. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
