Troy Aikman praised Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, commending their victory in the Super Bowl. The former quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys spoke highly of the team, coaching staff, and ownership as he witnessed the rise of the next dominant force in the NFL.
Aikman himself experienced success as part of a dynasty in Dallas, reaching four consecutive NFC Championships and winning three Super Bowls in a span of four years. Now, he is passing the torch to the new generation.
During the mid-90s, Aikman’s Cowboys were the dominant team in the NFC, achieving seven seasons with double-digit wins between 1991 and 1998. He secured his first Lombardi trophy in 1992 and added two more by 1995.
However, since then, the franchise has struggled in the playoffs, failing to advance beyond the Divisional Round for the past three decades.
As Dallas faded from the spotlight, other organizations rose to prominence.
One notable example is the New England Patriots, who enjoyed an unprecedented run under Tom Brady, winning six titles from 2001 to 2018. Now, the focus has shifted to Patrick Mahomes.
In his six professional seasons, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to the AFC title game each year, including four Super Bowl appearances with a 3-1 record as a starter.
Aikman, now a commentator for FOX, understands the difficulty of winning three championships.
Congratulations to the Hunt family, Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization. They are on an incredible run! 👊🏼

Unfortunately, Aikman’s congratulations were overshadowed by previous comments he made about Mahomes and the Chiefs.
With three championships already, Mahomes has achieved the same level of success as Aikman in half the time. This has resurfaced an old post from five years ago.
Even before winning his first Super Bowl, Mahomes was already celebrated for his exceptional play on the football field.
This included putting up impressive numbers, as highlighted in a 2019 podcast by The Athletic.
“In case you missed it: Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman’s career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games,” read a headline from the podcast.
Aikman responded sarcastically, emphasizing the importance of Super Bowl titles.
“In case you missed it: Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles,” Aikman tweeted in September 2019.
Now, Mahomes has three championships in just six years, compared to Aikman’s 11 NFL seasons. Given his age and the team around him, Mahomes has a real chance of challenging Brady’s legacy.
Aikman, on the other hand, can only hope to eat his words as the Chiefs continue their success.
