If you claim to have accurately predicted the final score of Super Bowl LVIII, chances are you’re not being truthful. Prior to Sunday’s game, out of nearly 18,000 NFL games, only 12 had ended with a score of 25-22. Proving such a prediction would require video evidence, which fortunately for Stan Smith, a sports anchor for KLBK News in Lubbock, Texas, exists. Smith had indeed correctly predicted the 25-22 final score for Super Bowl LVIII, as captured on video. On February 9, he shared his prediction with his fellow news anchors, stating that he was picking Kansas City. After the game, Smith asked if he had the script, referring to his accurate prediction.
On Friday night, @_mattstell had asked me to predict the score of the Super Bowl. Without much thought, I responded with 25-22 for Kansas City, acknowledging its unusualness. Do I have the script? pic.twitter.com/vEV91Avrjq — Stan Smith (@StanSmithTV) February 12, 2024
So, how did Smith manage to make this prediction? In an interview with Awful Announcing, Smith revealed that the numbers were mentioned during a discussion on Pardon My Take, featuring legendary broadcaster Chris Berman. Smith had to quickly come up with a response when asked about the score, and he blurted out “25-22.” Knowing that very few games had ever ended with that score, Smith admitted feeling a bit foolish afterward. However, Sunday night proved him wrong.
When the game reached 19-19 and headed into overtime, Smith started to think that things were getting strange. In addition to his accurate prediction, he had also played some squares for the Super Bowl, with the Chiefs assigned 5 and the 49ers assigned 2. As a result, many people on social media are now turning to Smith for sports-related answers and predictions.
“Will the Cowboys ever win the Super Bowl in my lifetime??” one comment on X read. Smith replied, “It will come to me when the time is right. I’ll get back to you on that.” Another X user jokingly claimed that Smith had stolen the script. KLBK News Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley even chimed in, boasting about the station’s ability to accurately predict snow totals and now the Super Bowl score and winner. It seems that watching KLBK News before major sporting events might be a good idea.
